It is a gage block. A solid block of steel that has been accurately ground along two sides to be a very accurate distance. It is shipped in a small box, inside a plastic bag with an anti-rust paper, and includes a calibration certificate. The calibration certificate shows the actual deviation of the block you receive from the intended measurement (and this deviation is measured in micro-inches (10^-6).The use for this item is verifying that other measurement devices are reporting an accurate measurement when they measure an item of known size. Nothing “exciting”, but a very necessary tool to have if you do want to verify that your tools are giving accurate measurements.
