Mitutoyo feel and quality usually makes for a good value purchase--and these certainly did
I purchased my first Mitutoyo tool in 1988. That 6" dial indicator is still traveling with me and works just as smoothly and accurately as it did when new. My Gerstner tool chest has about equal Starrett and Mitutoyo tools. Some of the Starrett stuff goes back to the 40's. But the newer stuff is all Mitutoyo. Why? Although not cheap, the balance of cost and quality seems to remain consistent.I bought this set for measuring the cylinder bore on small displacement air cooled engines. Nice feel, smooth operation with good locking make the tools easy for a beginner (my students) to use with accuracy. I purchased a larger set at a "big box" seller of all manner of China sourced tools. They do no lock well, the extension of the two "arms" feels "gritty". Yes, they were nearly 80% cheaper, but if you make a living with the tools, the accuracy and no worry about quality stuff like the Mitutoyo gauges will reward you over the long run.
